- [Lynn Adams (Jeweler)](https://mbrownfa.com/lynn-adams)
  Lynn Adams moved to Lyme, NH from London, England in 2002, soon after leaving a business career and earning a Higher National Diploma (a UK degree-level technical qualification) in Silversmithing, Jewellery and Allied Crafts. This training spanned aspects of jewelry-making: manufacturing silver boxes, raising beakers, hand fabricating settings for gemstones. Her interest settled on enameling and this she has made her focus and passion. She juried into the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen in the Spring of 2003 and has shown her work widely through the NH Craftsmen galleries and also the Epoch Gallery in Manchester, VT and the Collective Gallery in Woodstock, VT. Lynn writes: "I love the materials I use, sterling silver and European enamels with their fine range of colors. I currently work in a style I call soufflé. Heat and the elements in the metal (there is copper in sterling silver) and the enamels allow me to explore the deep nature of and variety hidden within the materials. My inspiration is the materials themselves, but I also call on the beauty of the woods and mountains around us for their dept and range of colour and texture. Much of my work I term champlevé, I also pursue a plique-a-jour style where the transparent enamels form a window in the silver. This I find one of the most beautiful of the traditional styles of enameling." Lynn is also pleased to also be exhibiting at the gallery watercolor paintings, results of a recent interest in reaching beyond enameling in her play with shape and color. These paintings reflect her strong sense of pattern so evident in her jewelry.

  Suzani Arnold paints floor cloths on canvas sailcloth using attractive hand-printed and stenciled designs. Decoration work in her own house got her started developing the art form, with time she evolved to a technique of printing and hand-painting to produce floor mats that are extra rugged and rich in depth and texture. The art-form goes back to colonial times; with modern urethanes and an adventurous spirit Susan has built a unique aesthetic carrying an inviting handmade look.

  Todd Binzen holds a BA in studio art from Carleton College and a life-long passion for painting. Todd started as a painter of landscapes, still-lifes and people. A desire to explore subjects beyond the seen world moved him to abstraction. Todd has worked as an architectural designer, an art teacher and a tai-chi instructor. He lives in Strafford, VT, where he and his wife, Janet Cavanagh, raised their two children.

Birds, animals, impressions of light on the water, these are the subjects she enjoys developing using her delicate and inviting technique.

  Jennifer Brown, Matt Brown's sister, has made art steadily since childhood. She currently lives in Strafford, VT, but spent years growing up in Lyme. She teaches painting (at Lebanon's AVA Gallery and elsewhere), designs puzzle and book illustrations (Norwich's Stave Puzzles). She paints with watercolor, oil and gouache. A mother of two adult daughters, Jennifer’s imagery focuses on the world around her: the hills, farms, and houses of the Upper Valley, impressions of travels to the coast of Maine, out West, and abroad, intimate portraits of people in their environments.

  Working with clay has been a big part of Kira's life since childhood. Her mother was a weaver, so watching how things are made, developed, schlepped to craft fairs and enjoyed was also a piece of her childhood world. Distracted by higher education, travel, and having a family, she is seeing now that her six year-old self may have been right: making pottery is likely her destined avocation. Boasting numerous Lyme and Thetford connections, these days Kira lives in South Strafford, VT where she is raising two wild girls and several silly dogs. She is an unrepentant nature-nerd and her love of the outdoors is echoed in the colors, textures, and carved images on her pots. Her work is highly functional and meant for every day use. A believer in bringing beauty to common things, Kira believes life is a little bit better when you start your day with oatmeal in a handmade bowl, or if you sip your tea from a mug made individually by someone who has taken care and time in its making.

  Dierdre Dennis is a self-taught, regional-based painter. She began her artistic endeavor in elementary school, studying first with Marilyn Shea, where she participated in a group exhibition at age twelve. From that point, Dennis painted primarily on her own, until she met and subsequently studied with Dilys Evans, which proved pivotal and would lead to her first solo exhibition in 2001. Dennis currently lives in Strafford, VT, but spent years growing up in Lyme. She works with acrylic on canvas and is also a pastel painter. Her work is indicative of the natural surroundings. The subject matter is often minimal yet expressive through her use of color. Her current technique employs a heavy layering of paint which creates a dimensional quality to the work. Dennis has taught Figure Drawing, Printmaking, Pastels and Sculpture. Her paintings have been exhibited throughout New England.

  Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Jean came to Vermont over 3 decades ago. After her daughters left home, she moved to a small off-grid cabin where she now lives and paints. Growing up fishing and camping with family is what sparked her childhood interest in drawing. Seeing far shorelines of pine trees and long views across lakes made her want to draw. Later, living on the shore of Lake Superior during college, she began to paint. Most of her work today is with oil paint, but Jean also enjoys working with graphite, acrylic, and ink. Subjects for Jean's paintings come from canoeing and camping trips in New England, the Far North in Canada, and Alaska. On trips she works in watercolor, pencil, or ink. Bringing back a sense of these wild regions to viewers is the art she pursues. Each year Jean guides wilderness trips for a variety of organizations. Traveling slowly through the landscape by canoe or on foot develops an attachment to remote places that Jean finds essential for creating her artwork.

  Louise Hamlin taught painting, drawing, printmaking, freshman and senior seminars, and basic design at Dartmouth College until her retirement in 2019. She was the George Frederick Jewett Professor of Studio Art at Dartmouth College, Art Dept Chair, Area Head of Printmaking, and faculty advisor to the Book Arts Workshop. Louise was also a student of NYU professor Bill Paden, a _hanga_ printmaker and print mentor for Matt Brown, back in the 1990's.

  As a Dartmouth student in the late 70's, John Lehet began using the college camera club darkroom and quickly moved from 35mm to large format sheet film, carrying big bellows cameras around the mountains, hills, and valleys of New Hampshire and Vermont. In love with this landscape and community, he put down roots and built darkrooms. John Lehet sees his aesthetic roots as aligned with the compositional techniques of the "Floating World" Zen woodblock printers and his approach has been to appreciate a deep seeing: a motivation that the ordinary can reveal itself to be extraordinary, luminous, and resonant. A long-term meditation practice has dovetailed with a vision of a manifestation of space, in the Buddhist sense, in art. John sees his photographs as about a resonance of mind and emotion with our perceived landscape. For John modern large format archival pigment printers and newer digital cameras provide better results than the film and silver gelatin of his earlier years. He sees his approach as continually developing, rooted in traditional photographic methods learned early, but evolving with newer digital technologies through a seeing and a feeling which shapes his work and pushes it forward.

  Tony grew up in Detroit and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interior Design at Wayne State University. He had a long and rewarding career in Interior Services, primarily as the Director of Interior Design at Bloomingdales in Chestnut Hill, MA. His introduction to pottery occurred in the 80’s at Mudflat, the leading center for teaching the art and craft of clay in the Boston area, where he took numerous courses in both wheel-throwing and hand-building. Since returning to Vermont in 2014 he has been able to concentrate exclusively on work in clay, in addition to taking further classes at CraftStudies and Earth Star Pottery. He is currently working at CraftStudies as a studio monitor and instructor. Tony brings a focus on play and inventiveness to his work, usually expressed through unconventional shapes and surface treatments. Rather than imitating traditional forms or other artists, he follows his own path where the clay leads him. While he enjoys sharing this approach with others, he appreciates and fosters the exchange of diverse ideas with anyone who wishes to express themselves in clay, regardless of their goals or level of experience.

  Formerly an illustrator of childrens' books and magazines, Meg works full-time now as a painter. She is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art and a member of the Copley Society of Art in Boston. She first moved to Lyme in the early 80s, left, came back, left, came back, then left and came back. She is thoroughly settled in Lyme now but still likes to travel. Her paintings feature imagery of Lyme and the Upper Valley alongside images of Scotland, England, and small oases in cities such as Boston or New York. Her work is primarily oil on canvas or board; she also makes gouache paintings and exhibits wonderful drawings in charcoal.

  Kim lives in East Thetford and began making her polymer jewelry just a few years ago. She explains that she has been having a great deal of fun with it, coming up with continually new designs and colors.   Amanda Ann Palmer Amanda moved to the Upper Valley from Alabama in 2006. Making pottery has been her serious pursuit since graduating from college as a ceramics major in 2005. Formerly a resident of Thetford, she now lives and has her workshop and kiln in Hartland, VT. Her work is both functional and sculptural, and she seems happiest focusing on glazes that allow her shapes and forms to stand out ahead of her colors.

  Fred and Kate established Pearce Design decades ago and have had full lives making their living as makers of handmade jewelry since the 1970's.   John makes functional and sculptural ceramic pieces using the Japanese hand-building method called Nerokomi. Nerokomi involves form buildng pieces with clay slabs which are a multi-layered sandwich of different colored clays.

  Catherine “Catrinka” Randall, a member of the Santa Fe Society of Artists, is a self-taught, award-winning artist who loves painting birds, animals, and pet portraits. Her sensitive animal watercolors can be seen in separate venues in Santa Fe and Vermont. Catrinka was an equestrian for years with her beloved horse Henry, an off-the-track thoroughbred. In 2018 Randall retired from her professorship at Columbia University to begin the next chapter of her life as an artist. Randall has won several prizes in various exhibitions in New Hampshire for her watercolors. She also has had a one-woman show at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island in 2022. The Carlsbad Museum in New Mexico features her prize-winning painting of cave swallows in its permanent collection. In addition to her American buyers, Catrinka’s patrons include buyers in both Italy and Canada.

  A former architect, Jonathan paints from his studio in North Thetford with two mediums: soft pastels while working outdoors and acrylic paints when in his studio. He seeks to to keep a play of color and visible application throughout his working process, striving for an immediacy and freshness which he enjoys. Much of Jonathan's work is imaginary, or remembered. He paints well-used objects, small toys, stuffed animals, people and places that he knows well. Though he makes figurative and landscape paintings, his imagery is usually motivated by ideas he is working toward: humor, hope, or, with Covid, isolation and distance.

  A one-time resident of Thetford Hill, Karin now lives and works in Norwich, VT alongside the CT river. She makes slab-built, freeform pottery celebrating the natural beauty of clay. She has taught pottery for years and is pleased to explore variety and diversity in her work with clay.

  Jenny Sparks (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist who recently relocated to the Upper Valley. She grew up in Maryland, then lived, worked, and played in Providence, RI for 12 years. She earned a BA in Geology and a BFA in Sculpture through the Brown/RISD Dual Degree Program. You may find Jenny drawing in her sketchbooks, which she views as the heart of her artistic practice. She also makes wood-fired pottery, jewelry, drawings, paintings, and has worked on public sculptures. She is a member of the New Hampshire Potters Guild. Jenny enjoys cross-pollinating her work with her varied interests, finding meaning in her materials and processes, and hopes her efforts and interests are helping to create a more joyful world. Since moving to the Upper Valley, Jenny helped start a local Community Rewilding group, and loves to talk about native plants and ecology.

  A former land surveyor, Roger Thrall pursues woodworking with a special focus on wood and paper lamps inspired by a Japanese aesthetic. From his shop in Thetford, VT he makes furniture both speculatively and on commission; his soft mood-light lamps, using oriental paper light diffusers, are his special interest and passion.

  Gill Tyler Lived for many years in Lyme and Thetford. She was loved by many and has left a large and colorful body of work. We are thankful to two of her granddaughters to be able to offer paintings from her estate for sale.
- [Kunisada (Toyokuni III): Chushingura  (Printmaker)](https://mbrownfa.com/kunisada-toyokuni-iii-chushingura)
  Prints of Utagawa Kunisada are the exception to the MBFA gallery residency rule. Utagawa Kunisada (1789 - 1865) never lived in Lyme or Thetford, indeed he never left Japan. Japan was a closed society until 1853 (foreigners were excluded and no Japanese were allowed to leave Japan). The year Admiral Perry forced open the country to visitors and trade (1853) Kunisada was 64 and at the peak of his artistic production. Friend to many popular actors of the time, he had been for decades the most successful artist in Edo, intensely immersed in the complex culture of theater and art production of that city (one of the largest cities of the world). Kunisada lived in Edo towards the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate, a 200-year period of military dictatorship ending in 1868. Largely overlooked by art history until recently, Kunisada was exceptionally prolific (the MFA in Boston owns over 10,000 prints designed by Kunisada). Kunisada had the most students, produced and sold the most prints, and enjoyed the most prestige. Gifted a Kunisada print in 1995, my interest in Kunisada was piqued in 2013 by Prof Allen Hockley of Dartmouth College. Prof. Hockley, while describing the scale of the _ukiyo-e_ print art industry, described “no one knows how big this industry making these woodblock prints was, and actually Matt, the guy who made by far the largest number of prints was Kunisada". Fascination grew while visiting the Boston MFA's first exhibit of Kunisada's art, “Showdown: Kunisada vs. Kuniyoshi" in the fall of 2017, curated by Sarah Thompson. Later finding these wonderfully crafted and designed prints available and affordable, I began purchasing prints from dealers and through online auctions with a notion of getting to know Kunisada better. A maker of color woodblock prints myself using the same Japanese _hanga_ method, I see this pursuit as a way to deepen my appreciation of what is possible with the _hanga_ printmaking process. I think of Kunisada as "my teacher".

- [Max Van Pelt (Painter/Sculptor)](https://mbrownfa.com/max-van-pelt)
  Max Van Pelt grew up in Boulder, Colorado and graduated from Dartmouth College in 2011, where his work in sculpture and drawing was awarded the Jonathan B. Rintels Prize for the outstanding undergraduate thesis in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Prior to discovering his artistic intentions, Max was an archer - a thirteen-time national champion and athlete on the United States World Team. He derives additional passion from exploring his surroundings as an experienced whitewater kayaker, oarsman, and avid mountain bicyclist. After his first chapter in the Upper Valley, Max maintained a decade-long studio practice in Providence RI while also working as a welding instructor, fabricator, and art preparator. His work has been featured in Big Red & Shiny, on NPR, and by Art in America's "The Lookout." He now lives and works across the river in Thetford, Vermont and has been building a house with his hands. Max makes dynamic paintings, intricate sculptures, and site specific installations that navigate the geometries of architectural, environmental, and emotional space. The works are places where divergent attitudes, appearances, and forces have a tendency to converge and resolve within the necessities of their cohabitation. The participation of a viewer allows these visual expressions to move from ambiguous to something specific and personal - the production richest in its potential not just to represent ideas, but to evoke them with frequency: regularly, and in appropriate tones. \- Artist type: Painter / Sculptor (If we had to pick one, you could just say painter.)

### H. Yoshida

Made in 1920 as part of a nation-wide fundraising effort to build the Meiji shrine in downtown Tokyo (in honor of the Meiji empress and emperor), it was Hiroshi Yoshida's first print project. Originally part of an editions of 3000 most of which were mounted to scrolls, this particular print was never mounted and remained for 100 years in the collection of the Yoshida family. It is thought Hiroshi Yoshida kept this particular impression for himself. Aspects of its appearance are distinct from other known impressions, the location of signature and publisher markings for instance, is unique. We think of it, as a selected impression of H. Yoshida's first print, as a portal for H. Yoshida (40 years old at the time of this print's manufacture) into a career of color woodblock printmaking.

The concept for this six-panel piece arose while drawing one evening during a canoe camping trip on the Aroostook River in Maine. The project recalls for me evenings camping alone alongside a lake or a river. At this time of day a stillness settles in bringing a vague sense of unease. Emily Dickinson describes this “between” time in her poem “There’s a Certain Slant of Light". There’s a certain slant of light, on winter afternoons That oppresses, like the weight of cathedral tunes… When it comes, the landscape listens, Shadows hold their breath;…. Many cultures see this transitional time of day as a sacred time. In the Hebrew Book of Genesis days are separated not by night and day, but by evening and morning. Each day created ends with, “And there was evening and there was morning, a first (second…) day.” Seeing this sentence written in Hebrew stands out for me. It reminds me of hearing a Narragansett native woman speaking of the liminal times of day, morning and evening, as being sacred. I use the word Erev in the title to suggest the quiet holiness of this time of day.

A meditation on Wooster Square Park, a 6-acre park in the old Italian neighborhood. The park is encircled by a black cast-iron fence, has straight, imperfect star-design paths, a bewildering diversity of trees. This tree was a youngish one, near the site of the Columbus statue, since removed. Though small, the park is a potent focus of natural effects: it floods, has some winters huge snowfalls, is encircled by Yoshino cherry trees that explode with blossom in Spring. The park creates silence, and the contrasts of dark and light are stark, and it seemed to me that through the dark door of black winter Spring might be coming on through. This is night and silence seen through a dream.

### Utagawa (Andō) Hiroshige

  - [Goldmines of the Sado Province, by A. Hiroshige | Color Woodblock Print | 14" x 10"](https://mbrownfa.com/reca3LyE2IiV3YCwo) — Gaining for gold near the Ai River of the Sado Province began in the early 17th century and became a principal source of finance for the Tokugawa shogunate government (established in Edo around that time). Hiroshige developed this image by borrowing from a manga illustration by Hokusai called 'Goldmines' (Kanayama), published in 1815. Text from a Ronin Gallery catalogue of 2023 notes that “by Hiroshige's time the veins were running dry and the working conditions had significantly declined. The mines finally closed in 1989." Seen from the point of view of human industry in relation to the earth's buried treasure, this image is fascinating in its depiction of a mountain landscape. Note the rivers emerging from inside the mine portals, and the way Hiroshige depicts the towering mountain shapes, reminders that many of the waters of our earth arise from mountainous areas.

  Exploring point of view and travel in the work of U. Kunisada, K. Hasui, A. Hiroshige, and H. Yoshida.
  Shown is H. Yoshida's first woodblock print project: “The Sacred Garden of the Meiji Shrine", a 1920 collaboration with the shin hanga print publisher Watanabe. Commissioned as a fundraiser for the construction of the Meiji Shrine in downtown Tokyo, we think this print project likely functioned as an important portal for Hiroshi Yoshida: into his life of color woodblock printmaking! We are hopeful for a demonstration/talk event, on a Saturday afternoon, by Matt and Taylor in early May.

The exhibit includes a wonderful set of 5 Post Pond paintings by Meg McLean, large light-filled canvases painted right there in the woods by Louise Hamlin, and various watery treasures by many MBFA artists. Shown is “Dusk Settles on the Lake", an oil on board painting by Petey Becker.
