Gerber and Gorman: Paintings
This exhibit is inspired by Jean Gerber's large format painting “Evening".
January 23, 2026 - February 28, 2026
Shown is a short visit with Evening. The idea for Evening came to Jean during a canoe trip on the Aroostook River in northern Maine. It explores an interest in the liminal time of last light just after sunset, a sacred moment of the day exemplified by her interest in the Hebrew word, “Erev”. Jean writes:
“At this time of day, between light and dark, a stillness settles in bringing a vague sense of unease.”
Jean explains Jean lives and paints in an off-grid cabin in Thetford surrounded by acres of conserved forest land. When not painting, Jean is often in a canoe, exploring rivers and lakes in New England or the far north in Canada and Alaska. Sketches from these trips provide inspiration for her oil paintings, including the multi-paneled piece: Evening.
Greg writes that he calls his series of paintings for this exhibit “Safe Harbors/ Ports of Refuge”: an emotional response to the plight of peoples who seek refuge from political repression, climate disasters or economic failures. In Greg's mind this includes peoples seeking safety from violence, domestic or otherwise.
