Jean Gerber

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Jean came to Vermont over 3 decades ago. After her daughters left home, she moved to a small off-grid cabin where she now lives and paints. Growing up fishing and camping with family is what sparked her childhood interest in drawing. Seeing far shorelines of pine trees and long views across lakes made her want to draw. Later, living on the shore of Lake Superior during college, she began to paint. Most of her work today is with oil paint, but Jean also enjoys working with graphite, acrylic, and ink.

Subjects for Jean’s paintings come from canoeing and camping trips in New England, the Far North in Canada, and Alaska. On trips she works in watercolor, pencil, or ink. Bringing back a sense of these wild regions to viewers is the art she pursues. Each year Jean guides wilderness trips for a variety of organizations. Traveling slowly through the landscape by canoe or on foot develops an attachment to remote places that Jean finds essential for creating her artwork.
